Description

OYSTER 54 BABE - PRICE REDUCTION

The Oyster 54 replaced the 53 in the Oyster range in 2008 and was designed by Rob Humphreys and the Oyster design team as a fast and elegant bluewater cruiser with a little more emphasis on sailing performance. The 54 was drawn with a longer waterline, more sail area, and slightly lighter displacement than her predecessor, while also carrying her beam further aft to enhance her performance, particularly off wind. The rig and her secure centre cockpit, which is around 25% bigger than the 53, are geared towards easy short-handed sailing for a couple. The 54 certainly delivers either as a proven circumnavigator or as a family cruiser. Below decks, she has a simple and seamanlike three-cabin layout, which is as practical as it is beautiful. Oyster launched twenty-one 54s between 2008 and 2013 when a slightly tweaked version, the 545, was launched.

Babe is Oyster 54 hull number 17 and was commissioned and equipped by her current owners for the first Oyster World Rally in 2011. Her rig is a simple and easy sloop with an electric push button furling to her mainsail. Her interior joinery is hand-finished in rare maple, and she has benefited from caring and dedicated owners and had a substantial refit in 2022, which included new standing rigging, batteries and plotters. Now lying on Australia’s Gold Coast, Babe is ideally placed to explore those waters or head up into the South Pacific. She is registered on the British Part 1 registry, but the Australian GST and import duties have been paid.

OWNERS’ COMMENTS

We purchased Babe from new in 2011 and spec’d her to enable the two of us to easily and safely circumnavigate the world in comfort, which we did as participants of the inaugural Oyster World Rally in 2013-14. Following this we continued to mainly liveaboard whilst sailing around the Caribbean, Columbia, Panama and the South Pacific, our favourite cruising ground. As our primary home, we have endeavoured to keep Babe in a pristine condition, meticulously maintaining her and undertaking a range of improvements to make our life at sea easier and our home more comfortable. We have been impressed by how well-built and dependable Babe not to mention how well she performs on a passage, comparable with the larger Oyster 56.

Following the pandemic in which Babe was confined to New Zealand we commissioned a range of work to get her back in tip-top ocean passage condition, including fully re-rigging, new service batteries, plotters, interior refurb etc, following which we returned to Fiji and onto Australia in 2022, where Babe is currently based. She would make a great home for a couple or a family either for another circumnavigation or extended holidays in luxury.

1. CONSTRUCTION

HULL NUMBER
Oyster 54.17.

HULL CONSTRUCTION
The hull is of composite moulded construction from female tools developed by Oyster in their own facility, closely supervised by the Oyster Design Team.
Moulded using a combination of vinylester and polyester resin with the outer topside finish in white gelcoat.
Laminate material comprises a combination of E-Glass, Kevlar and Carbon Fibre. This ‘custom’ laminate offers significant weight savings, strength and stiffness advantages over a normal GRP construction, carbon for weight and stiffness, Kevlar for impact resistance.
The topside structure incorporates an 18mm end-grain, balsa core above the waterline for additional strength, stiffness and insulation.
Below the waterline the hull features a solid laminate, reinforced with a matrix of stringers and floors. Combined with BS1088 standard marine-ply structural bulkheads this produces a robust structure, with excellent strength to weight qualities. Moulded GRP base units are used to mount the internal joinery and also form head and shower compartment modules.

HULL FINISH
‘White’ hull with cove line and double boot top lines in standard Oyster ‘Blue.’

DECK CONSTRUCTION
Moulded in GRP to the Oyster G5 deck saloon profile style, with a balsa core for strength and insulation. In load bearing areas the core is replaced with plywood for additional strength, and all load bearing fittings have backing plates/washers.

DECK FINISH

A prospective Buyer is strongly advised to check the particulars and where appropriate, at their own expense, to employ a qualified Marine Surveyor to carry out a survey and/or to have an engine trial conducted, which if conducted by us shall not imply any liability for such engine on our part. Life-saving appliances do not form part of the inventory and it is for the buyer to ensure they are in date and suitable for their purposes.

*The tax status of the Vessel is an indication only based on the Seller’s understanding, for which The Oyster Group and its subsidiaries can accept no liability. Prospective Buyers are strongly advised to seek appropriate qualified independent advice concerning any taxes or duties which may be payable in their own, or any other jurisdiction.
