Main features
The 53 looks great, sails fast, and offers a choice of interiors that rivals most custom boat builders. The build quality places these vessels in the realm of the most demanding offshore cruisers. The 53 is built in a two-part mold with a fiberglass structural grid bonded to the hull and an aluminum reinforcement grid under the salon floor for added strength and rigidity. A full-length liner is then inserted into the hull and topped with a balsa-cored deck. Below the waterline is a cast iron keel with a bulb, available with a draft of 7'5" or 5'10" for the shallow draft version. Displacement of 33,000 pounds and a beam of 15'7", making it moderately light and not too wide – that is, "fast".
The 19/20 fractional rig from Z-Spar features a battened mainsail on deck, with two sets of quartered spreaders. A roller furling mainsail or traditional fully battened mainsail is available. The standard total sail area is 132 square meters with a 135% genoa. The mast is just over 21 meters tall, which could pose a challenge with some fixed bridges along the East Coast. Unlike the tall, bulbous look of the 54, the 53 has a low and more angular deck, almost flush. So it is easy to move around and offers good forward visibility while still providing ample headroom below deck. And there is still plenty of light in the salon thanks to the hull ports and three large raised hatches.
The cockpit is well organized, with the forward section designed for relaxation. The aft section includes two wheel steering with a central pod for electronics and two primary winches. Two more winches and a set of stoppers on the cabin top manage the rest of the lines, all led aft. The printed sheets and halyard boxes, located between the winches and clutches, will keep the cockpit clutter-free. A dedicated aft locker allows for launching the liferaft without leaving the cockpit.
The L-shaped galley to port is well equipped, with ample counter space, a microwave, and a top and side-loading refrigerator/freezer. Two or four bathrooms are available depending on the layout option. The straight sofa to port in the salon has a flip-up backrest/armrest that forms a small game or cocktail table with a hidden cup holder behind. A U-shaped dinette to starboard can accommodate eight people using the two additional inboard chairs. The interiors are finished in Alpi teak, with stainless steel handles, LED lighting, and numerous leather details. The design is as sleek as the exterior, with clean lines and minimalist decor.
The Jeanneau 53 is a beautiful and well-built boat that can sail offshore at a fraction of the price of many custom cruisers. It has a sleek and slippery look, but also conveys a true aggressive air. The shape of the deck and the straight bow give it an aggressive touch that suggests speed. The spacious cockpit can accommodate six people for dinner, but also allows a couple to manage the sails with little effort. This is a comfortable boat that offers so many interior options that, regardless of the size or composition of the family, there will be a good setup for anything from weekend getaways to much longer adventures.
