Description
BIG PRICE DROP!!
Astara is a wonderful representation of the well known J42. With here new Awlgrip paint job, new North Sails and elegant varnished teak toe rail, she stands out amongst her peers. For over a decade the current owner has used her on the coast of Maine, employing a captain and storing her inside at Lyman-Morse. This program allowed Astara to maintain a very high condition, when many of the others show their age much more.
In the last 2-3 years the owner of Astara has made significant improvements to ensure the next steward is not going to be burdened with any significant refit. They will be ready to start cruising immediately.
Here are a few of the recent upgrades:
- New main and jib from North Sails
- New batteries
- New custom dodger, bimini and main sail cover
- New halyards and sheets
- New hull paint
- New black water hoses
The boat is in Camden, Maine and can be seen by appointment.
Interior Layout
The J42 is a prized for their logical use of space on the interior. Having two cabins, two heads, a very functional galley, proper nav. station and a spacious main salon in only a 42 foot hull is impressive.
From the bottom of the companionway the galley is to port and the nav. station is to starboard. The guest cabin is aft of the nav. station and the guest head or day head is aft of the galley. Moving forward the large salon is mid ships with full length settees port and starboard and a centerline main salon table with fold up leaves. Through the forward bulkhead the owner's head is to port with the berth in the classic V berth layout

Design notes
J42's are designed to fulfill two goals: privacy for each of two couples when cruising or ample space and convenience for one couple living aboard for an extended period of time. Sailing J42s are easy for one person, thanks to superb wheel response and a common-sense sail plan. J42s balance well and sail upwind faster under mainsail than some cruisers using both main and large genoa.
A self-draining deck anchor-storage locker, behind the standard Lewmar electric windlass, is big enough for an anchor rode and cruising spinnaker, ready-to-fly in a "snuffer" sock. A watertight collision bulkhead separates this locker from a spacious owners' stateroom with twin berths (convertible to an over-size double)
The main cabin features exceptional joinerwork in varnished cherry with cold-molded fiddles and oval door trim. Vertical panels are in low-maintenance, antique white Formica. Two main settees double as sea-berths and are pitched outboard 5 degrees for secure sleeping at anchor. Stainless overhead grabrails are excellent handholds, drying racks and lee-cloth anchors.
The J-shaped galley is well ventilated next to the companionway and features a recessed, deep, double sink in a Corian countertop.
Five deck hatches over interior living spaces are mounted on the cabin trunk to permit use when sailing. Exceptional ventilation throughout is provided by four dorade intakes, 11 opening ports and the dodger-protected companionway.
