Description

     Seabird, previously Flirt, is hull No. 9 of the Navy 44 MKI fleet. Built in 1990 for the US Naval Academy, Flirt had a history of success in ocean races across the east coast and Bermuda. The Navy 44s were purpose-built for sail training in an offshore environment. After an extensive refit in 2023, Flirt was renamed Seabird.     

     Built by Tillotson Pearson, only 20 exist. It features a masthead sloop rig, 946 sq ft of sail area and a 7.25-ft draft. Inside, it sleeps seven and includes a galley, nav station, and head. With a hull speed of 7.88 knots, it’s respected for offshore/coastal performance and durability.

     Seabird is a 1990 Navy 44 MKI. She has navy blue topsides with a gold sheer stripe complemented by a white boot stripe and red bottom paint. Completely refurbished interior containing 7 berths with new cushions. She was repowered in 2022 with a new 40hp Nanni diesel engine. Seabird boasts completely new electronics, new anchor windlass and Rocna anchor, new head and holding tank, a Spectra main, and new 130% genoa.

     Currently used as a sail trailing vessel, Seabird can be used as a business, family cruiser, racer or a combination. Ready to cruise this season, Seabird can be viewed in Portland by appointment.

Upgrades from Bow to Stern

  • Installed new Harken roller furling system with new 7/16” forestay
  • Installed a stainless-steel bow roller and mounting plate
  • Installed Maxwell electric windlass and new wiring with deck and cockpit controls
  • Rebuilt forward hatch with black powder coating and new Lexan glass
  • Removed and re-bedded port and starboard chain plates 
  • Replaced all stainless-steel chain plate bolts and nuts
  • Removed and re-bed all deck mounted blocks and hardware
  • Constructed two bunks in the V-berth with sail storage
  • Installed new plywood on bunks and lockers
  • Repainted entire interior with 3 coats of high gloss white
  • Removed and replace rotten head bulkhead 
  • Removed old engine, old hoses and wiring. Cleaned and insulated engine box
  • Installed new 4-cylinder fresh-water cooled marine diesel engine with new motor mounts.
  • Installed new fuel lines and filter. Installed new electrical wiring and starter panel. 
  • Replaced entire sanitation system, including holding tank, head, macerator pump and all hoses 
  • Installed hot water tank, connect to engine cooling and 110V and replace plumbing hoses
  • Replaced freezer plate and tubing and install refrigeration compressor
  • Installed Fireboy propane fume detector system 
  • Replaced transducers for speed and depth instruments
  • Installed Garmin electronic package and integrate with NMEA 2000 wiring (new)
  • Installed new Raymarine instruments and compass on cockpit bulkhead, all new wiring
  • Installed new LED lighting or replaced with LED bulbs. Rewired all lights.
  • Serviced all 12 deck winches
  • Stripped bottom paint and applied 3 coats barrier coat 2023 + 2 coats ablative

Tankage

  • Stainless-steel fresh water tanks: 2 x 70 gal + 40 gal day tank =180 gal capacity (cleaned 2024)
  • Stainless-steel fuel tank: 1 x 60 gal (cleaned 2023)
  • New dometic holding tank: 1 x 20 gal

Interior Walkthrough

     From the cockpit a removable wooden companionway ladder with teak treads provides access from the cockpit to the main cabin accommodations below.

     Below the steps is the engine box, which is completely removable for convenient access to the Nanni 40 diesel engine.

     The main cabin includes a full galley with stove, refrigerator, and double sink on the starboard side. A captain’s quarter berth is aft of the galley. On the port side of the steps is the head with the nav station ahead of it. Large storage lockers are located aft of the galley, and between the head and the navigation station.

     Four berths are in the main salon with storage for each crew member provided in small lockers. A fan and LED lights are available for each crew member.

     Forward of the main cabin are two large lockers, one of which is a hanging locker. Ahead of these are the V-berths, with sail storage below on each side. Two large hatches are located in the main cabin and one in the V-berth area.

Galley

     The galley, situated on the starboard side, has a L-shaped design that offers convenient access from the cockpit. The galley's interior includes a white Formica countertop and cabinets bordered with teak wood. Along the outboard section of the galley is small shelf storage with a large pantry locker just aft. A double stainless-steel sink is present, offering hot and cold pressurized water. The galley is also equipped with fresh and salt water foot pumps. Below the sink is storage space. The galley features a stainless-steel 3 burner gimbaled propane stove equipped with an oven at the outboard side. The countertop area is bedecked with LED dome lights, and a 12-volt fan. The new refrigerator and freezer can be accessed through top loading countertop hatches.

Aft Quarterberth

     Aft and starboard of the companionway is a quarter berth featuring a single berth with ample storage above and underneath, LED lighting and a fan.

Head

     The head has a new (2023) Jabsco manual flush head that can be pumped into a holding tank or overboard when offshore. 20 gal tank, y-valve, and hoses are all new. There is a showerhead on a retractable hose for showering. A sump under a slatted teak floorboard collects freshwater from crew showering and from the sink. It is pumped out manually. 12 Storage cubbies are above the sink in the head for crew toiletries and supplies. There is an opening portlight in the head.

  • The forward facing nav station is on the port side and ahead of the head.
