Description

Curlew is a beautiful example of the ocean worthy Mason 33, little sister of the well-known, world-cruising Mason 43. She was built in 1986 by the renowned Ta Shing yard in Taiwan. Her graceful lines draw attention in every anchorage and her inviting teak interior make her a pleasure to sail and live aboard. She is ready for many more years of voyaging near and far.

Curlew is Hull #21 of 23 built. She measures 33’ 9” LOA, with a 10’ 10” beam, and a draft of 5’ 0”. Her long keel is cut away at the forefoot, reducing her wetted surface area and improving maneuverability, without any loss of directional stability. She has a medium-heavy displacement hull with a comfortable motion. Her displacement is 14,000 lbs.

Her cockpit is deep and secure in all weathers. The seats are long enough to stretch out on and even sleep under the stars. There are voluminous lockers port and starboard with a separate, vented locker aft for propane bottle and dingy fuel.

After 10 years of sailing their local Martha’s Vineyard waters and the coastline from the Chesapeake Bay to Maine, the owners are now transitioning to the next phase of their lives.

Extensive Refit and Upgrades

Upon purchasing the boat, the current owners embarked on an extensive refit. Most of the work was performed by the Deltaville (VA) Boatyard where she was purchased, although the maintenance and upgrades have continued throughout the owners’ tenure. All work has been done professionally and meets all ABYC standards. The list of replaced and upgraded components is extensive and includes major and minor items throughout the boat.

Engine and Batteries

Yanmar 3GM30F engine was rebuilt by factory-certified technicians. New engine mounts were installed; her Max Prop was rebuilt and adjusted. Two new Lifeline AGM 220A batteries were installed for the house bank and a new starting battery was installed. All new battery wiring.  Shore-side charging is protected from inadvertent reverse polarity. Balmar battery combiner and three-stage charging keep the battery banks at optimal charge while running the engine.

Deck and Topsides

The old weathered teak decks were removed, except for the cockpit seats. Decks were faired, Awl-Gripped, and Tread Master non-skid was applied. Old teak hatch bases were removed and replaced with GRP bases. Cabin sides and deck were faired and Awl-Gripped. Hull was sanded, faired and painted with Flag Blue Awl Grip. Below the waterline the hull was sanded, faired, and epoxy coated prior to being painted.

Construction Details

The hull is heavily laid up fiberglass, solid without coring or sandwiching.

Deck is FRP with balsa coring, all coring is sound and dry. Solid plywood in way of all thru-deck penetrations and structural fastening (i.e. stanchions, winches etc.). The deck/hull joint is of the inside flange type, with marine adhesive and thru-bolts every 6”, capped with massive teak toe rail.

Decks were originally teak. The teak was removed, the deck surface faired and painted with Awl Grip, and Treadmaster non-skid decking was applied. All deck hardware was bedded and reinstalled.

Anchor roller/pulpit was reinstalled. There is a heavy bronze roller for chain or rode.

Ballast is fully encapsulated iron casting – no hull joint, no leaking.

Accommodations

From aft forward, there is a fully equipped Galley to starboard with refrigerated compartment under the counter, Double bowl sink with pressurized fresh water (hot and cold), and foot pumps for both fresh and salt water.

Nav station to port, aft facing and protected from any spray or rain from cockpit. Large working surface with generous chart storage. Electrical panel opens for easy access to wiring loom.

Forward of the salon are tall hanging lockers to starboard, and the head to port.

The head contains a hand-pumped toilet, single sink, large storage lockers, and a faucet that can be extended to allow for on-board showering. The interior of the head is constructed of single molded FRP to eliminate corners and seams to prevent leaking and for ease of cleaning.

The owners’ cabin is forward with an offset double berth and plenty of storage, including drawer space, hanging closet, and clothing lockers port and starboard.
