Description
1985 Bayfield 40 Ketch – “Entropy”
The Bayfield line of cruising sailboats was developed in the early 1970s at the Bayfield Boat Yard in Clinton, Ontario, and designed by the renowned H. Ted Gozzard. The Bayfield 40 is the pinnacle of this design heritage—a timeless blend of classic styling and modern functionality. With her graceful clipper bow, traditional trailboards, and finely crafted teak combings, she captures the romance of a bygone era while offering the space, comfort, and performance expected of a capable offshore cruiser.
“Entropy” is a true turn-key vessel, maintained and ready to set sail on her next adventure. She was lightly used each summer and carefully winterized every year. More recently, she has proven her seaworthiness with many enjoyable seasons cruising the Long Island Sound, always stored safely on the hard in NY. The owner has spared no expense in keeping her updated, safe, and ready to cruise anywhere.
This fine yacht is worthy of your inspection—she will not disappoint. Don’t let this vessel slip away!
What Makes the Bayfield 40 Special
The Bayfield 40, designed by Ted Gozzard and built by Bayfield Boat Yard Ltd. of Ontario, Canada, is a proven short-handed cruiser that excels in both comfort and capability. This cutter-rigged ketch offers multiple sail configurations—more than most boats her size—allowing excellent balance and control in a variety of wind conditions. Her full keel and moderate displacement provide a safe, stable ride, while her shallow draft (approximately five feet) makes her ideal for exploring the rivers, bays, and creeks of the U.S. East Coast as well as the shallow waters of the Florida Keys and the Bahamas.
Accommodations
The interior layout of the Bayfield 40 is both distinctive and practical, featuring two private staterooms aft and a spacious head with separate shower forward. This configuration creates an expansive main saloon amidships, illuminated by a large butterfly hatch that fills the space with natural light. The result is an inviting and comfortable interior—perfect for extended cruising or living aboard.
Interior Features:
Teak and holly sole throughout
Two private aft cabins with cabinetry and privacy panels
Spacious saloon with settee and large dining table to starboard
Navigation station to port
Large “butterfly” hatch for natural light and ventilation
Multiple opening ports for cross-ventilation
Abundant storage throughout
“Entropy” represents the best of Bayfield craftsmanship—classic design, solid construction, and thoughtful upgrades throughout. She’s ready for her next chapter with an owner who appreciates her beauty, comfort, and bluewater capabilities.
