Description
s/v Brandywine
Here is another Sceptre 36, the red hull s/v Brandywine (Note Price Drop). This nice Sceptre was repowered with a Yanmar 3GM30 diesel in 2001 and comes with a 9’ Zodiac RIB Dinghy and a Wallace 30D diesel heater! Designed by Hein Driehuyzen, and built by Sceptre Yachts Ltd. in Vancouver, thirty-six Sceptre 36 sailboats were completed between 1978 and 1984. Brandywine is hull number ten. The most interesting and thorough review of the Sceptre 36 is in The Best Boats to Build or Buy by Ferenc Máté. With 10 pages of copy and drawings, it’s well worth a read!
The Sceptre 36 hulls are solid fiberglass and the deck and coach-house are fiberglass with balsa core. The rig is a modern masthead, with rod rigging footed well inboard, enabling the Sceptre to point well upwind and allowing for wide decks outboard of the chainplates. The Sterns mast is supported by four shrouds per side with rod rigging and rod backstay with hydraulic backstay adjustment. There’s a PROFURL furling system on the forestay for the genoa. While there is a Barient #18-halyard winch on the deck near the mast, most lines lead to the cockpit, with Barient #21 trim winches on each side of the companionway under the dodger. The primary winches are self-tailing Barient #27’s. The tall, skinny main sail has three full battens and one partial on large slugs. Reef rings are hand-stitched with sewn webbing for both reefs.
The interior is light with four opening Hood SS portlights, varnished woodwork details like corner gaps in table fiddles, good storage, and a pass-through for the trash can in the lazaret. Like many boats of the day, you could load the ice box or reach a beer from the cockpit. A refrigerator has been installed under the nav table, which is larger than most recent boat designs. The galley is well laid out, with more storage than you’d find in bigger boats. Just check out the v-berth and storage across from the modest head. You will appreciate the cockpit design with a real propane tank and the protected engine controls.
This strong classic racer/cruiser is a straightforward sailing machine, a great sailing boat that could take you anywhere in the Salish Sea or around Vancouver Island. Nobody builds boats like this anymore! Come see her before she sails away. . .
