Description
The Bristol 40 MELADY has had three owners, the present owner Robert D. Burrell, for 24 years. The boat has been configured for single hand operation. Some of the features are incorporated to facilitate that type of operation in any weather conditions.
A downwind preventer system is installed to facilitate main sail safety when sailing downwind.
A dual tether safety system, extending from the port and starboard sides of the cockpit forward to the mast and then further forward to the bow is incorporated to enable safe deck operations in rough seas.
Electronic systems are redundant for helm and below deck operations of communications, navigation, and radar. Below the water line operations are also redundant.
The boat is equipped with three anchors to facilitate close quarter anchoring.
A Fairclough 3 piece winter cover, replaced from original, was purchased on 7/02/2021. The boat has been winter covered since purchased with the mast indoors.
Hull Deck:
- White hull, green boottop, green bottom.
- Harken Mark IV roller furling system.
- Eight winches on the mast and in the cockpit to facilitate sail handling.
Mast:
- The mast is keel stepped with wiring routed from the base of the mast to the required terminal boxes to facilitate equipment interface.
- The mast head mount has a Windex vane aft, a Raymarine electronic wind vane system forward. Comm #1(AIS) and #3 antennas are mounted on a cross bar. The mount is reinforced, welded stainless steel.
- A Raymarine Quantum II Dopler Radar and a Furuno 1623 Radar are mast mounted.
- A hailer is also mast mounted.
- Spreader LED lights are mounted to allow for and aft deck lighting.

- Aft cockpit has engine and transmission controls, external power connection, water access, emergency hailing signal, open air mounted propane tank, overboard rescue equipment.
- Hand bilge pump at Starboard side aft, antennas for comm #2, amplified offshore cell system, GPS #3 and #4, AIS GPS.
- Cockpit deck has a Bomar hatch to access the aft engine, transmission, shaft seal, and 30 gallon fuel tank. Fuel fill is port side aft, outboard of weather boards, to prevent onboard spills.
- Starboard sail locker has dual inverters and electronics junction boxes.
- Port sail locker has second battery bank, hot water tank, and A/C circuit breaker panel.

- Comm #3 also has remote capabilities from the forward cabin.
Heat:
- The forward berth is equipped with an electric heater.
- The main cabin is equipped with electric heat under the port seat.
Pumps:

- The DC electrical panel is aft of the Nav Station, and is original Bristol equipment. Above the panel are dc battery charge control centers for the port and starboard battery banks. The fire and propane leak warning indicators are located directly above the main switching panel. DC electrical fuse panels and buss strips are located below the main electrical panel.
- All control master switches and master control fuses are located in the starboard battery compartment.
- The boat is equipped with a “Hot Buss” system, which allows all priority sensors, alarms, bilge pumps, and one com and one nav to be powered for emergency use. Other system monitoring instruments are located on the side of the of the panel.

- The engine air inlet is taken from the battery compartment to prevent fire suppression gasses from being reduced by engine operation.
- The exhaust system is a lift system with cooling water supplied through a vacuum break, thus preventing water from below the water line from entering the engine.
- The engine compartment is equipped with a multilayer high tech environmental bag, which is supported by the engine mounts, to prevent lubricant spills from entering the bilge and thus be pumped overboard. This covers present environmental regulations that were not in existence when the boat was manufactured.
