Description
The INTERNATIONAL DRAGON was designed by Johan Anker in 1929 to be a small cruising boat, complete with two berths, to be sailed off the coast of Norway. The design quickly gained popularity and in 1948 was selected as an Olympic Class boat, an honor it retained and sailed in the Olympic Games until 1972. Its popularity is affirmed by the fact that approximately 1400 Dragons are registered around the world even this many years after the Olympics.
Singoalla (translated means 'a Norwegian seductress') was built by Anders Gjeruldsen Batbyggeri ("Boatbuilders") of Grimstad, Norway in 1947. She is the second Dragon registered in the United States and carries sail # "USD 2" She was totally restored by East Passage Boatwrights of Bristol, Rhode Island between 2006 and 2008. She won an award for professional restoration at the prestigious Mystic Seaport Boat Show in 2008. Great care was used in her restoration to assure an authentic restoration and not just a "repair". The quality of her original materials is evident in her original full length quarter sawn clear Norwegian pine (a scientific 'double first cousin' to Douglas fir) topside planks. Her decks are Larch overlaid with Dynel. Covering boards and coaming are mahogany. The new mast is aircraft spar grade Sitka spruce.
Dragons, while absolutely beautiful to look at are even better sailors as they are foremost SAILBOATS where artistic form delightfully meets function.
SINGOELLA comes with a custom Triad trailer and new sails made in 2024. Currently on a mooring in Camden, Maine.
