Description

WL 18 Mosselaak

WL18 'Pheasant'

Peter Tolsma and IJsbrand Dijkstra write in the book "The mosselaak WL18 'Pheasant', a true "Lemmerjacht" (2020):
We know that in 1916/1917 two Zeelanders each ordered a new mosselaak from Gebr. De Boer in Lemmer. They are both fishermen who want to use the ships, besides for mussel farming in Zeeland itself, primarily for catching mussel seed in the Wadden Sea to then transport them quickly to their mussel plots in Zeeland.
The fishermen in question are: P. Verschraegen. He orders the 'Pheasant', referred to in the yard book as a motor boat with yard number 173 and the Gebroeders Schot. They have the motor fishing boat 'Maria Cristina' built with yard number 176.

The research into the origin is extensively described in the book

It is nice to see that thanks to a lot of research, the client and the transition of ship owners over time could be clearly established. The first name and the definitive construction date of the ship have also become clear as a result. This was possible from various sources, the yard book, fishing register, ship cadastre, and Kromhout register.
The name was: 'Pheasant' and the year of construction 1916. Sometimes this name is spelled differently as Fazant, but in the Zeeland Fishing Register, it is clearly stated with an "s". Therefore, IJsbrand and Alda restored the ship's original name FASANT in 2020, alongside the fishing number WL18.

The Mosselaak

A mosselaak is a somewhat broader and slightly fuller Lemsteraak, somewhat less deep-drafted than the other Lemsteraken, specially designed for the transport of mussel seed and mussels from the Zuiderzee and the Wadden Sea to Zeeland. A number of Zeeland fishermen made these trips annually to be able to plant that seed in their own plots in Zeeland. There, the mussel grew further and was harvested and traded after being watered several times. The Lemster mosselaak turned out to be a fast sailor and a very manageable ship compared to the Hengsten and Hoogaarsen, which are the usual Zeeland fishing vessels known as 'Lemmerjachten'.

Due to the fact that a considerable number of these ships were in Bruinisse, they were also referred to as 'Bruinisser jachten'. The word jacht here is derived from the old homeland meaning of 'hunting', which meant 'fast sailing'. It is said that it saved the fishermen, who sailed to the Wadden Sea and back from Zeeland, a full day to complete this journey. And also for bringing mussels to market, that speed was of course important. No wonder that a considerable number of Zeelanders ordered a mosselaak from De Boer in Lemmer, Stapel in Enkhuizen, Appelo in Zwartsluis, and Van Goor in Kampen. In Zeeland itself, following these aken, shipbuilders had the idea to equip their own ships, which were suitable for that, with a similar stern. This led to the creation of the Lemmerhengst, among others.
