Delphia 11 electric custom upgrade
The Delphia 11 electric "Life" version is delivered as standard from the yard with a 50kW Torqeedo electric motor and a 40kW Torqeedo battery, good for about 4 hours of autonomy at 9 km/h with a consumption of 9kW.
In addition to this factory system, this 2023 model Delphia 11 Sedan has been custom adapted. This upgrade includes: 6 Sunpower Maxeon 430W solar panels, (2) 3.5kW Torqeedo 24V lithium household batteries, a 24/5000 Victron inverter, a Whisperpower Piccolo 10 kVa generator, and a Torqeedo DC/DC converter that connects the high-voltage drive battery to the 24V household batteries.
This extensive system provides significantly more autonomy:
The 2.6kW solar panel installation fully charges the 7 kW lithium household batteries in a few hours. Through the large inverter, all household consumers can be powered – air conditioning, heating, kettle, boiler, etc. – without shore power.
Solar energy can also slowly charge the 40kW drive battery via the DC/DC converter when the ship is moored in the wild.
The generator provides virtually unlimited range after about 4 hours of fully electric sailing at 8–9 km/h. While sailing, it charges both the high-voltage drive battery and the 7kW household batteries, and provides the necessary 9kW for a cruising speed of 9 km/h.
With a consumption of about 3 liters per hour, this series-hybrid solution is much more economical and quieter than a parallel-hybrid with both electric and diesel engines (like the Greenline hybrid yachts), and ideal for low displacement speeds.
Usage instructions for optimal performance
Generator
When you are sailing and your destination is beyond the range of the main drive battery (about 4 hours at 9 km/h), it is advisable to turn on the generator when the battery reaches 20–30%, unless your destination is within an hour. This ensures that you can continue sailing without significant further loss of battery capacity.
Turn on the Whisperpower generator. Set the current on the Victron panel to 6–8A (to avoid overloading the generator).
In the B&G settings screen, increase the charging capacity to 32A (to fully utilize the capacity of the generator and the 2 charge controllers).
You are now fully utilizing the 10kVA generator to charge both the main drive battery and the smaller lithium household batteries.
You can also use the 24V household batteries to charge the large drive battery by lowering the slider 'LV to HV' in the advanced settings. This means you are now also drawing from the household system to charge the drive. This is especially beneficial on sunny days when the household batteries are already full and the excess solar energy would otherwise remain unused. Check the status of the household batteries via 'components' on the B&G screen; at 90–100% they are almost full.
Go to the 'energy flow' screen to see how much power is going into the main drive battery. While sailing, you can see on the throttle screen whether energy is going in or out of the battery, which gives an indication of the balance between consumption (for sailing) and regeneration (sun, generator, and household batteries combined).
Upon returning to the harbor: lower the charging limit in the settings screen to the value of the shore power connection.
Extra modification
Finally, an extra steering position has been placed on the foredeck of the roof, ideal in nice weather. This keeps the air draft of the ship limited to 290 cm, while still offering the pleasure of a mini-flybridge. During use in the warm summer months in France, the owner frequently used this steering position. Since this extra advantage is not equally ergonomic for every skipper, this mini-helm is included at no extra cost.
