Description
Bavaria | Custom 65
Bavaria sets an incredible benchmark for pre-owned catamarans; she has been immaculately maintained with every single step documented by her meticulous owner, a retired German airline captain who applied his working practice of keeping scrupulous checklists, procedures and maintenance to his catamaran.
Every single component and servicing procedure has been documented, and you will not find better service and owner’s manuals on any new or used catamaran on the market! Bavaria is an absolute dream for anyone who values serviceability and step-by-step maintenance instructions. The owner also keeps historic logs and future service dates for almost every component installed.
Over the years Bavaria has enjoyed numerous upgrades, including a substantial refit in 2006/2007. The following was done during the refit.
- The complete outer skin was replaced with seven layers of epoxy glass
- Entire coachroof was replaced with balsa end-grain tablets with new LEWMAR hatches.
- The windscreens were changed to tempered glass in Alu frames.
- The rudder shaft was re-engineered to enable removal of the rudder blade in less than one hour without affecting the steering system.
- The entire rigging was also removed, checked and replaced where necessary.
- New YANMAR engines installed and run for the first time in 1997.
- SS Davits added in 2003.
- A full aluminum dinghy was engineered, shaped like a rubber dinghy and installed.
- All electronics were changed/upgraded to FURUNO between 2011 and 2015.
This refit and upgrades cost the current owner almost more than the listing price and no cost was spared to get her into optimal shape. Considering all the upgrades and work that has been invested in her, Bavaria represents exceptional value compared to similar semi-custom catamarans.
She is constructed from a sandwich epoxy with AIREX-centre construction and built for around-the-world, open-water cruising.
Bavaria’s layout comprises four double beds, plus three singles in port and starboard hulls, making her ideal for families or those planning to entertain guests. Each hull features LAVAC toilets and showers, one in each hull.
The catamaran is also equipped with some of the best rigging available, including an ALU main mast with custom carbon-fibre LEISUREFURL boom and ALU mizzen mast with ALU LEISUREFURL boom. The main and Mizzen fully battened LIDGARD sails are from New Zealand. For ease of use the genoa furls from a cockpit e-winch, and the boomvang is a NAVTEC hydraulic pre-charged system that is rarely - if ever - seen on catamarans.
Bavaria has been equipped with systems that truly facilitate easy management and sailability by one or two people. The owner also added a plywood keel covered by 6mm SS channel to meet the rudder shaft for additional protection and simple serviceability.
Bavaria was built by Gil's Catamaran, master craftsmen of custom catamarans & trimarans since 1955 in Southern California, USA. Gilbert of Gil's Catamaran is now 88 years old and still building custom catamarans to this day. Gil is a highly skilled craftsman and one of the original pioneers of building custom catamarans. The builders know-how, combined with the current owner’s refit, attention to detail and smart upgrades, make for an exceptional catamaran worth a serious look.
