OWNERS REMARKS:

Skylark of Tollesbury is a Thames Oyster Smack - she was completely re-built in the early 1980's.

After the rebuild and launch in 1983 we sailed her in the local races including the Thames oyster race to Greenwich.  In 1985 we had a trip to Amsterdam and in 1986 we moved house from Tollesbury to the Isle of Wight. Since when we have made a few cross channel sorties and attended the festival in Brest & Douarnenez

In the early 2000s she was ashore and out of commission for a period of time and in 2012/14 We laid a new deck of Douglas fir and fitted new stanchions, bulwarks, and rail capping.

In 2014 / 16  the keel bolts were replaced and new plastic tanks for both diesel and water fitted. The following year she was rigged with brand new spars including a mast , boom, gaff, and bowsprit.

The old Petter diesel engine has been replaced by a Bukh 24ME installed with a new prop.

In 2018 she was surveyed by Nigel Harrison and his recommendations were carried out including the replacement of the topsides i.e. 3 planks on each side and complete recaulking from the waterline down.

The galvanised standing rig is in good condition as are the halyards and running rigging.

She has a Simpson and Lawrence heads that could do with a service and a Taylors 030 stove with oven.

She is fitted with a new VHF radio and aerial, she also has a set of  new vinyl upholstery cushions.

Her mainsail is a bit tired but serviceable and the the headsails are in good order.  I do have 100 metres of Clipper canvas to build her a new suit of working sails

"Skylark of Tollesbury" was built as a pleasure boat for Clacton pier which opened in the 1870s. Her first registration as a fishing boat was recorded in 1905. She dredged for oysters until the 1950's and as such she represents a part of the heritage of the coastline of Essex. She is almost 150 years old and over the past 45 years I have tried to keep her as authentic as possible. She still has her original keel.
