Description

This is a rare opportunity to obtain to obtain one of these coveted Doug Hylan designs.

She was obtained by me in late 2022 from the professional furniture maker in Vermont who built her to Hylan's design specs. The craftsmanship and finish cannot be beat. She is mahogany ply coated with with epoxies for a very lovely, light and low maintenance vessel.

She includes all the equipment needed to sail her: centerboard, varnished tiller with rudder and the varnished spar with sail.

She has two rowing stations and one set of Shaw and Tenney spoon oars (new 2023) with leathers and bronze oarlocks as well as a bronze Wilcox Crittenden padlocked oar lock.

There is a snug custom made pale gray Sunbrella cover with bent oak bows (as new) that can both snap and tie down.

A small trailer in 'as new' condition accompanies the sale.

She also comes with the full set of Hylan's build drawings and plans.

From the Hylan & Brown website:

"Most boats produced as tenders today row so poorly that it is little wonder that their owners often turn to an outboard motor for help. But if you wish to forego the noise, expense and pollution of a motor, you may find that a peapod is the ultimate yacht tender.

These are great little boats, seaworthy, stable, and easily rowed. Here is a pod that is a bit smaller than most, but she will still carry a big load and bring you through some lumpy water with confidence.

Beach Pea uses modern glued lapstrake plywood construction, so she is lighter and easier to build than a traditionally-built boat. In addition, you won’t have to worry about her seams opening if your pod has been out of the water for a while. The clean interior will be easier to maintain, and a coat of paint will last longer on the stable plywood surface.

Owner's comments: "I have never sailed her although the previous owner/builder did regularly in a lake near his home. I have sealed the lower opening of centerboard but that could be easily removed.

In addition I determined the waterline and painted out the bottom with Interlux two part barrier coat and Micron bottom paint. She has received two maintenance coats of Epifanes high gloss varnish annually as well as a coat of wax on the hull. Only touch up paint has ever been needed.

Over the years I have had a total of three peapods. One wood, one fiberglass and now this wood and epoxy boat. This is certainly the most lovely, the lightest (it does not soak up water and gain weight given the epoxy build) and the sweetest rowing under any conditions.

She is presently under her Sunbrella cover and under my back deck for the winter. She can be uncovered and viewed for a serious buyer.

All photos, except the ones of her on the beach and in the water, were taken in October 2025."
