Ramblin’ Rose, was originally commissioned by a Swiss engineer who was passionate about expedition cruising, scuba diving, and underwater photography. The Nordhavn 55 suited his family’s needs perfectly as the model has been proven to be a safe, comfortable, and reliable platform, easily handled by an owner-operator. When it came to outfitting the owner chose significant upgrades which would best enable the yacht to perform as required.
A few of these upgrades are mentioned below:
- A FRP hardtop was ordered to cover the flybridge.
- A commercial-type hydraulic system using a PTO from the Lugger diesel wing engine was installed, powering both ABT 25 HP bow and stern thrusters, the anchor windlass, an anchor chain wash down, and an emergency crash bilge pump.
- A Bauer Capitano II/DV-E1 SCUBA dive compressor, 6.0 SCFM, 5000 PSIG was installed with 4 filling manifolds which are located in a cockpit locker. Six SCUBA tanks are mounted in the lazarette with 4 Roll Control diving tank holders placed next to the filling station in the cockpit. The factory extended the swim platform and added a commercial-duty swing-down polished stainless steel swim ladder to better accommodate diving activities. Six dive tanks, Three Sea Doo Explorer underwater diving scooters.
- A hanging locker for drying wet suits was incorporated into the space beneath the stairway leading from the cockpit to the upper boat deck.
- Two 800 GPD Village water makers have been installed with long range cruising in mind.
- A NVTi night vision camera was specified for safely navigating harbors or anchorages in poor visibility.
- A 12KW Northern Lights generator was added for redundancy to augment the standard 20KW Northern Lights generator.
A new Aquamet 22 main engine shaft added in September 2015 and the bottom was painted 2022. She has recently been serviced with all fluids and filters changed. The stabilizer bearings replaced May 2016.
The Pilothouse aboard Ramblin’ Rose appears large compared with most yachts in the 55’ range. There is an expansive navigation console with overhead panels in addition to below window dash panels logically outfitted with all of the necessary control panels needed to operate the vessel. The centerline Stidd helm chair provides full visibility forward and to both sides out of the Pilothouse windows. The Pilothouse windows and outboard Dutch door windows are all Diamond/Sea Glaze fabricated to commercial specification. There is a large L-shaped bench seat fronted by a beautiful teak table that is the perfect place for scenic viewing and keeping the watch keeper company. Beneath this seating area is a very large pull-out drawer which contains an extensive collection of nautical paper charts.
The helm dash features a large stainless steel destroyer steering wheel. The Lugger main engine, Lugger wing engine, and both Northern lights generator control panels are positioned overhead for straight forward monitoring as are all of the other key systems display monitors around the helm. There is a practical electrical monitoring “island” that extends aft from the starboard side of the dash area and houses all of the DC and AC breakers plus the air conditioning select breakers and in general all of the power management controls necessary for the vessel. All of the ships electrical distribution panels are hinged for access for servicing.
Ramblin’ Rose was commissioned with an upgraded hydraulics package which is powered by the Lugger wing engine through an ABT PTO system. This system powers the ABT 25 HP bow and stern thrusters (proportionally), the hydraulic anchor windlass, the power wash down system for the anchor chain, the emergency crash pump, and the get-home system which utilizes a four bladed Gori folding propeller.
In addition, Ramblin’ Rose can be maneuvered with the convenient installation of three docking stations (Pilothouse, Portuguese Bridge, and Flybridge) which include MMC electric controls for the main engine plus joy sticks for the bow and stern thrusters. There is an extensive collection of navigational electronics selected to include all the necessities for long range coastal cruising and long-distance ocean passages. The forward overhead in the Pilothouse is black Majilite to reduce glare and the flooring is all vinyl Longseal which is especially comfortable on bare feet.
There is a stairway leading forward from the Pilothouse which leads to the Master Stateroom and the Guest + 1 Stateroom; the steps are covered in Longseal, and there are built in cabinets and lockers built in outboard to starboard.
There are Dutch doors leading out both sides of the Pilothouse to the Portuguese bridge and to the upper aft boat deck. The Portuguese bridge docking station is located on the starboard side forward and offers true stem to stern visibility along the starboard side.

Engine Room/Electronical System/Lazarette
The engine room is fronted by a thick gasketed Diamond Sea Glaze door with an inspection window. The main engine, a Lugger 1276A 340 HP diesel is located on the centerline. Immediately to starboard upon entry is the gravity fed fuel supply day tank which receives fuel from the four main fuel tanks and distributes fuel to the main engine and both generators; the Lugger wing engine has its own fuel supply tank. The fuel return manifold and fuel transfer manifold are located on the starboard side in front of and below the starboard fuel tank. Aft of the starboard fuel tank and bulkhead mounted is a heavy-duty oil change system. The port outboard bulkhead comprises the mounting location for the extensive hydraulics system.
There is a proprietary dual inlet sea chest located on the centerline beneath the main engine shaft which provides cooling water for the wing engine, generators, air conditioning, etc.
Aft on the starboard side is the Lugger diesel wind engine and day tank.
Aft to port is the Northern Lights 20 KW generator. The floor panels are designed with the removable lids in key areas for access to service and inspection. All the way aft is a door to the lazarette which is a highlighted feature since it provides underway access to the steering, inverter and batteries without having to go on deck. The spaciousness in the engine room for getting around and observing provides the crew with areas to stand or sit making this vital area of the boat extraordinarily easy to work in.

Located beneath the aft deck cockpit the lazarette is accessed via a massive gas assisted fiberglass hatch; it can also be accessed as stated above through the engine room. The dual hydraulic steering system is located aft and there is also an emergency steering tiller mount which can be accessed through a removable cap in the cockpit sole. Twin Magnum series inverter/battery chargers, new (2017) AC Delco batteries, hydraulic stern thruster, air conditioning and davit control motor area all neatly installed for secure operation. An optional second 12KW Northern Lights generator is mounted to port. This lazarette is protected by a built-in Sea Fire System. There are also six SCUBA tank brackets (with tanks) secured to the sole. This lazarette is a working space that is easy to get around in for routine maintenance and inspections.
Boarding Ramblin’ Rose from the swim platform through the center door leads into the cockpit; one can also board from the starboard side gate and either walk aft to the cockpit or utilize the starboard “walk-around” and proceed forward to the bow. In the cockpit a curved stairway to port leads to the upper boat deck. A large hatch in the cockpit sole opens to the huge lazarette. Storage compartments, shore power connections, dive tank holders, a hot and cold fresh water shower are all located within the cockpit/swim platform areas.
Enter the salon from the Dutch door leading from the cockpit. The salon is spacious, well-appointed, and light. The beautiful teak joinery of the cabinetry throughout the yacht is a trademark of P.A.E. as are the teak and spruce soles. An L-shaped dining area is to port with a large teak table and built-in seating (abundant storage under) against the aft and port bulkheads. Three custom teak chairs compliment the seating arrangement. A 46” flat screen TV (new in 2013) with an electric lift is cleverly concealed within the galley counter forward of the dining area. Across and to starboard of the dining area is a large teak storage cabinet. Forward of this cabinet is a large ultra-leather settee. Cabinets and under-seat storage is plentiful. Edge-bound high-quality carpet protects the sole, and pull string blinds provide shade and privacy when required.
Enter the Master State room by continuing forward from the galley; this makes for a single–level layout that is one of the most appealing features of Ramblin’ Rose. With all of the Master Stateroom doors open, all of the living spaces (forward Guest + 1) are on the same level. For privacy, with the Master Stateroom door closed to the Galley, the forward Guest + 1 is accessed by going up then down through the pilothouse stairs.
The large king-size island berth in the Master lays athwart-ship and features a soft upholstered headboard; there are bed stand counters on either side of the headboard, and there is plenty of walking around room on both sides to allow easy access and egress. The screen allows duplicating the main navigation computer from the pilothouse (MaxSea). On the right side of the bed, there is one FURUNO RD30 multifunctional display with various functions. There are opening port lights outboard to port, and the stateroom is air-conditioned. A hatch forward opens to the Portuguese bridge walkway providing natural light and a protected air flow which can be a huge plus at anchor. There is a mirror on the forward bulkhead as well as a pair built into the head cabin door. There is an enormous storage area beneath the king size bed, and there are two hidden lock boxes for valuables plus a safe located in the Master Stateroom. Closets, drawers, cabinets and lockers abound. Teak and spruce soles.
The Master connects to a large Head to starboard, which includes the upgraded shower option forward and a nice head with proper sink and counter. There are mirrors, drawers, a medicine locker and more than enough room for his and hers toiletries. Practical tile floors add a decorative flair.
FORWARD GUEST + 1 STATEROOM
Forward of the Master Stateroom is a cleverly designed cabin with a movable centerline bulkhead which separates a double bed to port from a raised single bed to starboard. The centerline bulkhead is capable of being configured in two ways; (1) the sliding partition may be moved forward to match a fixed partition, divide the stateroom length-wise, and create two individual staterooms and (2) the sliding partition remains hidden within a pocket and the “fixed” forward partition hinges forward to fully open this space into one large stateroom. Large cabinets, drawers, and hanging lockers are abundant. There is a hidden pull-out canvas pipe berth within a horizontal cabinet located above and outboard of the double berth to port. There is a door from each side of the centerline bulkhead to accommodate both the Guest and the + 1 Stateroom. The forward head and shower area includes a large ceramic sink and huge medicine cabinet. There is plenty of light with two overhead hatches (w/screens and blackout capabilities) for ventilation. The sole in the forward head is tiled, while teak and spruce soles are found in the cabin area.
FORWARD GUEST + 1 SHOWER
The forward head has an overhead hatch and two cabin doors. A granite counter with a large white ceramic sink and an ample medicine cabinet is located to starboard. A good-sized shower with a bi-fold door and a Raritan freshwater toilet are included.
FORWARD GUEST + 1 BASEMENT
Beneath the Forward Guest + 1 stateroom is a huge equipment and storage basement; this area is accessed through a large gas assisted hinged hatch in the sole. Descending by ladder to the central area, you find the basement defined by four separate sections. All of the way forward is access to the bow thruster and anchor winch and wash down systems. The section immediately aft of section one contains four deep storage shelves. The third section where the ladder terminates contains a wonderful work bench with vice, and a vast assortment of power and hand tools all carefully mounted to the bulkheads for easy accessibility. Lighting is excellent and headroom is ample at 6’0”. The fourth section which is all the way aft in the basement contains both STW 800 GPD Village Marine Water makers and associated equipment, the hot water heater, water pump, freshwater manifold system and more shelves for storage. The entire overhead is finished in perforated sheeting to match the engine room. This is an amazingly large area that houses extra supplies and provisions which highly compliment the overall capability of this expedition cruising yacht.
CAPTAIN'S/THIRD GUEST CABIN
This Cabin is located directly behind the Pilothouse and is ideal for a hired Captain; it can also be utilized as a third Guest Cabin. This Cabin is very cozy and offers a double wide bed, cabinets, drawers and storage lockers; there is a large full-width glass window facing forward into the Pilothouse which is nicely privatized with a full black-out curtain. In addition, there are windows on the port and aft side.
PILOTHOUSE DAY HEAD
Located aft to starboard in the Pilothouse this day head features a freshwater Raritan head, and a sink with hot and cold water. This head can be used by the occupants of the Pilothouse as well as serving the guest in the Captain’s/Third Guest Cabin.
Descending the curved stairway (with Longseal treads) from the Galley you arrive in the Utility room at the base of the stairs. Located just forward of the engine room this area includes a large storage locker, a top loading GE freezer. located just below a stainless steel topped work counter. There is a front-loading GE clothes washer located on the starboard side, and a front-loading GE clothes dryer located on the port side. A commercial FAC-4 first aid kit, a Defibtech Lifeline defibrillator, and a DAN (Divers Alert Network) oxygen bottle are mounted to the forward bulkhead. The port stabilizer actuator is accessed through a locker door and the starboard stabilizer actuator is accessed through the hinged stairway steps.
The galley is located forward of the main salon on the port side. Two steps down from the salon elevation; the galley is a combination of simple elegance and practicality. The entire range of galley appliances are featured as is a double stainless-steel basin-style sink. Ventilation is excellent with an opening port light. There are commodious overhead and under counter lockers cupboards and drawers essential for outfitting a seagoing galley. A lovely tile sole provides a practical touch.
At the forward end of the salon to starboard you ascend a flight of stairs to arrive in the wheelhouse, or you can open a cabin door that leads to the master stateroom. Also off the galley to starboard is a stairway leading down to the engine room via a utility room (which features a top loading freezer and separate front-loading clothes washer and clothes dryer).

Ramblin’ Rose was ordered with the optional swim platform extension with SCUBA diving in mind. Additional benefits to the extension provide a larger stable platform for docking the dinghy when anchored or on a mooring. There is an extra U-rail socket so that you can turn one of the polished stainless steel U-rails fore/aft to make getting on and off the platform easier. The swim platform also offers a hot and cold fresh water shower for rinsing off after a swim or dive. Shore power connections are set within a waterproof fiberglass molding on the transom.
COCKPIT & STARBOARD SIDE DECK
The Cockpit is a good size for a 55’ yacht; it incorporates access to the lazarette through a large gas assisted fiberglass hatch, various storage lockers, and a curved access stairway to the upper boat deck. There are four Roll Control dive tank holders to starboard. There is a center opening door in the transom which leads out to the cockpit.
There is a covered walk-around on the starboard side of the yacht with a boarding door amidships. There are flopper stopper booms located both port and starboard. Using the walk- around you can access the upper boat deck and the forward deck safely in almost any conditions.
The Foredeck can be accessed from the Portuguese bridge on the boat deck or by walking up the starboard side stairway from the walk-around. The bow shore side power connection is located here as well as a freshwater hose bib. The ground tackle arrangement allows for two anchors and includes an upgraded hydraulic anchor windlass with hydraulic pump anchor chain wash down. The enormous chain locker can be accessed through the Freeman hatch on the foredeck.
The Boat Deck can be accessed from the stairway leading up from the cockpit, or from the Pilot House on the port side. This deck is directly over the salon and provides an ample area in which to store the tender and outboard with a lot of room to spare. There is a Steelhead SM 1500R crane installed for launching and retrieving the 13.5 Nautica wide body rigid inflatable. Forward on the starboard side of the Boat Deck is a built-in 40-gallon gasoline tank with nozzle meant for servicing the Nautica tender. When the Nautica is off the deck, the chocks may be removed and the open area offers an enormous space for relaxing and sunning.

The visibility from the flybridge has to be experienced to be appreciated; this is a must for commanding the yacht when entering a narrow lagoon, spotting dive buoys, or schools of fish! There are two Todd helm chairs facing the stainless steel destroyer wheel. A composite table with a built-in U-settee is located on the centerline behind the helm chairs. Just next to the exhaust stack there is a built-in locker holding Force 10 propane BBQ. Storage beneath the “eyebrow” forward of the helm is cavernous. All essential navigation gear is installed for simplicity of operation underway. There is a FRP hard top covering the flybridge.
