  2. Custom Sparkman/Stephens/Koopmans

    Papeete, French Polynesia

"Lola" (originally "Ariane") was comissioned by a dutch couple back in 1970. Plans of a successful ocean racer design were purchased from "Sparkman & Stephens", brought to Holland, and modified slightly by dutch naval architect "Dick Koopmans". The steel hull and superstructure were built by "Massdam-Dekker" yard in Holland and then moved to the "Royal Huisman" yard for completion and fitting out before being launched in 1972. The dutch are famous for producing high quality steel boats and "Lola" is a perfect example of one of these works of craftsmanship. No hard chines or buckets of filler, just lots of bending, panel fitting, and welding, to produce clean lines and rounded corners without any weak points.     The previous owner spared no expense on an extensive yard restoration on the U.S East Coast between 2010-2012 to bring her back to "New" condition from top to bottom. Including all new electrical, electronics, rigging, sails, mechanical systems, paint, varnish, etc. (the list is too long). After finishing the restoration he had her shipped to the west coast where he continued to liveaboard and sail her locally while keeping her in "show boat" condition. In our search for a cruising ketch we came across "Lola" and immediately fell in love with her. In March 2017 we purchased her with the intention to use her for what she was built for, some serious around the world cruising. We have sailed her from the West coast to Hawaii, the Marquesas, the Tuamotus, and are currently in Tahiti. "Lola" is a serious offshore cruiser, capable of handling whatever weather comes her way, we can tell you that from experience. She is easily singlehanded, and sails like a dream. Her large sail area gets her up to speed quick and the 6 tons of lead ballast in the keel keeps her stiff. Her long fin keel and skeg hung rudder make for a responsive helm while still allowing her to track well and self-steer with well trimmed sails.    We hauled her out in Dec '18 to grind the bottom all the way back to bare metal (no rusty surprises) and start a new bottom paint system. 4 coats of Amerlock Sealer (a penetrating 2 part epoxy sealer) follwed by 4 coats of Amerlock 2/400 (2 part epoxy high build primer) and 4 coats of Copper Coat (8 coats at the waterline). This should allow her to stay in the water without needing to be hauled for a bottom job for many more years to come. At the same time we had new sunbrella sail covers and a new sacrificial UV strip for the Genoa made. In January we bought a brand new Highfield 310 Ultralite (Hypalon) dinghy and 15hp Yamaha 2stroke motor. We have kept her very well maintained as well as making several upgrades to make her more cruiser friendly.     We have enjoyed the last 2 years sailing her and are reluctant to put her on the market, but we're expecting a new additon to the family soon and are heading back to shore for this next adventure. "Lola" is perfect for people looking for a solid and safe circumnavigator that could take you as far north or south as you desire. Or with a little polish and varnish work she could be turned back into a showboat. Currently located in Tahiti, sailing and living aboard. She is in turn key condition, ready for new owners to step aboard and start cruising immediately.
