REMARKS

DANCE SMARTLY, (ex. SHANAKEE) was a breakthrough design in her day and still remains current with the most modern concepts in layout and design. Her original build quality is absolutely of the first order, optimizing the best talents of the Palmer Johnson Yacht Yard in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

Ron Holland was among the first designers to blend Superyacht accommodations with serious performance capabilities under sail. DANCE SMARTLY is an early and exceptional example of this concept and - at the Showboats Awards the first year she was launched - was voted the “Overall Best Sailboat under 35 meters” and “the sailing yacht with the best interior” - a first for an American build and a testament to the skill of her now renowned interior designer Pieter Beeldsnijder

A hallmark of this yacht and design is the low-profile pilothouse which offers full line-of-sight visibility to the horizon from the raised entertaining and dining settee to port and navigation/communication stations to starboard. This area adjoins the lower salon, creating on the one hand a tremendous sense of spaciousness, while on the other allowing for separate and distinct livable areas with plenty of natural light above and below.

The owner’s suite aft is near-to-perfect with all the right features one looks for in a yacht of this caliber and size.   The identical guest cabins have flexible berthing arrangements to accommodate couples, singles and siblings with spacious bathrooms and separate marble stall showers that rival the master.

DANCE SMARTLY’s powerful sail plan is easily managed by minimal crew, with full hydraulic sail handling. She's remarkably light and lively at the helm despite her 130-ton displacement, due to her racing-style hull form, bulb keel and skeg hung rudder. Holland had proven the concept with an earlier design built at Royal Huisman that had excellent performance despite relatively shallow draft- and so it was with DANCE SMARTLY. The yacht gobbles up the miles offshore and is just plain fun to sail and as a result is ideally suited for partaking in the “regatta” circuit that has been developed in recent years for Superyachts around the world in places like Palma, St. Barth’s, Auckland and Newport. To quote Ron Holland “this yacht is a direct example of how racing boat technology developments do have a helpful influence on cruising yachts”. The result is a stiff, easily accelerated hull with superb tracking abilities.

DANCE SMARTLY has benefited from consistent maintenance and refitting over the years, and her current skipper has been with the yacht for well over a decade. She offers all amenities for gracious living aboard, while voyaging to all parts of the globe in absolute comfort, safety and style.

ACCOMMODATIONS

On Deck

The main cockpit is "T"-shaped, with the helm and all sailing controls aft and outboard of the entertaining cockpit. Forward of the helm to port and starboard are large settees facing a 6' drop-leaf expandable teak dining table, which also houses a refreshment refrigerator - a key feature indeed.

In 2000, the present owners added a custom cockpit hardtop and windshield, designed by The Ted Hood Design Group and built at The Hinckley Company, which offers full protection from the elements. In inclement weather the sides can be lowered for a full enclosure. This modification has transformed the vessel and made her much more “livable” in varied climes.

The aft deck features forward-facing and built-in seating port and starboard and a sunbathing area with cushions. The foredeck is large and when the tender is not being stored on deck there is plenty of additional space for lounging. A special element is the single seat in the bow pulpit which is an exhilarating place to be with the vessel underway and a great spot to relax when the vessel is at rest.

Pilothouse and Main (Lower) Salon

The low-profile pilothouse is forward and down four steps from the cockpit, accessed via a hydraulic sliding “door” which is recessed when open. There is a raised “U-shaped” dinette to port surrounding a custom teak dining table which comfortably seats eight. This sitting area offers an unobstructed 270-degree view to the horizon and is often a focal point of the yacht during the day. To starboard is the comprehensively-equipped navigation area with large forward-facing desk which wraps around outboard and aft to join with a second aft-facing desk and seat devoted to communications.

The pilothouse is open to the main (lower) salon below, creating a tremendous sense of space with an abundance of natural light which bathes both areas.

The full-beam main (lower) salon is accessed via a gently curved set of steps and features a large sitting area to port with an oversized “U shaped” wraparound settee anchored by a gorgeous teak rectangular table with holly accents. This table is perfect for cocktails when “low” and, expanding to three times its size when “high,” is ideal for setting up a buffet when entertaining a crowd. The lower salon is a favorite for watching a movie, TV or breaking out the video game consoles with a 46” Samsung flat screen TV which recesses nicely into the forward bulkhead - cabinetry beneath houses the stereo equipment, game consoles and the like.

Beveled lead-glass cabinet doors; recessed overhead lighting; two large opening hatches with varnished teak shades and screens; four large recessed hull ports and handy power outlets placed cleverly beneath the settee frame-reliefs all add classy yet practical touches.

There is a built-in “recess” with a locker beneath, aft of the settee, originally purposed for a firearm and now serving as a storage area. A proper half-hull model of the yacht is mounted in this recess and conveys with the sale.

To starboard in the lower salon is a second seating area with two upholstered swivel chairs. The aft bulkhead features a built-in bar cabinet with beveled lead-glass cabinetry above. Forward, on an angle with cabinetry and shelving flanking it, is a built-in brass fireplace with glass bi-fold doors. There is a subtle mantle above and a teak bulkhead which currently has a large framed photograph of the yacht’s namesake DANCE SMARTLY- the first Canadian Championship thoroughbred.

The forward-facing pilothouse windows form part of the ceiling of the lower salon and provide plenty of natural light as well as an enhanced feeling of spaciousness for what is otherwise a truly cozy area of the boat. Natural lighting in the lower salon is further enhanced by hull ports outboard on both sides- among eighteen sources of natural light in the salon alone.

Upholstered overhead panels in off-white match the curtains and carpeting which, along with neutral light-tan upholstery and matte-varnished honey teak cabinetry, create a warm and classic feel. The quality of the joinery work in this yacht is truly first class and the classic styling is timeless.

Owner and Guest Staterooms

The full-width owner's stateroom is fully aft with a queen-sized berth on centerline, vanity/night stands outboard, full sofa outboard to starboard with bureau, large hanging locker and 20" flat screen TV forward. There is a full writing desk forward to port and additional storage cabinetry aft. The owner's ensuite head is forward to port. Overhead hatches and hull ports provide both ventilation and light.

Guest staterooms are located port and starboard of the centerline passageway, with identical arrangements that offer remarkable flexibility; each are arranged with twin berths, which can be converted to queen-sized berths with little effort. Each have ensuite heads with separate stall showers, Pioneer AM/FM CD players, hanging locker, night stand and opening hatches to deck level. Each of these cabins also has a fold away Pullman berth outboard which is easily deployed and stowed and functions as a legitimate third berth in each cabin.

Galley and Crew Quarters

The galley and crew area is forward of the main salon, completely separate from the guest accommodations. There are two double crew cabins, each with over/under single berths and ensuite heads and showers. The crew lounge is next aft to starboard, with a settee surrounding the dining table, 19" flat screen TV, B & G repeaters, washer/dryer and dishwasher.

The "U-shaped” galley, outboard to port, is professionally equipped with an abundance of cabinets, counter space and professional appliances and gadgetry for preparing gourmet meals.
