The Hazel 18, an 18' centerboard sloop, is Nat Benjamin's latest design. The renowned builder Gannon and Benjamin od Vineyard Haven built two Hazel 18's during the 2011-2012 winter and launched both in June, 2012. One carries a Marconi rig, the other is gaff rigged.

The hull is built of 5/8" white cedar over oak frames. the deck is marine plywood with canvas set in rubber paint. The coamings, rails, seats and floor boards are either of wana or silver balli. All fastenings are silicon bronze.

The two available Hazel 18's have painted topsides, deck, and bottom, and varnish has been used only on the spars. Their coamings and guard rails have been finished with tung oil and their interiors are Penefin

Design Concept

The Hazel 18 reflects several factors that Nat Benjamin considers relevant to today's marketplace and to the general drift of sailing requirements observed on the Vineyard and elsewhere: The Hazel 18 is a responsive and fine performing daysailer for all ages. It can be sailed onto a beach and is easily trailered and easily maintained.

With her generous sail area, long LWL and powerful quarters, the Hazel 18 is attractive to younger sailors for racing and adventuring while not discouraging an older generation of sailors who will appreciate the bench seats and comfortable coaming to support the lower back.
